Everyone spreads the ratios. Almost nobody reads the footnotes. That's where things get missed.

The Manual Reality

An audited financial statement is 30 to 50 pages. The balance sheet and income statement take up 3. The rest is footnotes: contingent liabilities, related-party transactions, lease commitments, subsequent events, accounting policy changes.
